I have been in the Health Insurance and Financial Services industry for 25 years. The first 14 years of my insurance career were with Prudential Insurance primarily handling the life insurance needs of family’s like yours. In 1999, I saw an increase in the needs of self-employed business owners for affordable health coverage. Individual business owners were finding it more difficult than ever before to find health coverage that met their needs as well as their budget. In 2005, I joined the National Association for the Self-Employed. Since then I have been helping individuals, families and the self-insured business owner obtain affordable health coverage as well as ancillary products such as disability protection, critical care insurance and supplemental accident coverage.

We are the largest insurance certificate submitting the smallest amount of claims. We’re the self-employed; normally healthy, go to work sick and get out of the hospital early. This tends to keep our premiums at reasonable rates. That and the fact that we are adding 7,000 to 10,000 new insured’s to the certificate on a weekly basis; thereby spreading the risk over a larger number of people.

50% of the bankruptcies in Illinois last year were medically related and 70% of those people had health coverage. It wasn’t co-pays or deductibles that caused this; it was what insurance providers determined not to be reasonable and customary. We pay what is referred to as the maximum allowable charge and these charges are reviewed every 31 days to make sure we are in-line with what providers are charging for their services. In addition we know these charges up front. We are in charge of our own medical spending accounts. This not only keeps our costs down but the costs of health care in general within reason.
